I am the Sifu at Boulder Ving Tsun Kung Fu and in 2017 I moved here from Iowa City, Iowa. I bring to the Boulder community a unique style of martial arts that is traditional and unmodified, Ving Tsun of the Ip Man lineage through Moy Yat, to Moy Tung, and to my Sifu: Moy Yat Tung.
I will not go over they style and lineage too much here as you can read about that under the appropriate website tabs, however, I do want to talk a little about what Ving Tsun Kung Fu training can give to you. First and foremost, it is a fighting style. Not in a ring for prizes, but in the street, in real life. You will learn to give and take a punch. You will learn to move in a way that is the most optimal, powerful, spontaneous and efficient manner for the situation at hand. This can bring you a relaxed confidence that will translate into a better life as you navigate your way through interpersonal relationships of various kinds.
How can this help you in your everyday life outside of a physical confrontation? This is something I noticed myself as I was hiking the other day. Since moving to Boulder my wife and I hike almost every weekend, we love the mountains! As I was coming down a particularly rocky and steep slope I noticed how my own sense of balance and center of gravity made my steps down light and easy, as if I was as sure footed as a mountain goat! I was not rushed or overly cautious, but could select my steps in such a way to come down with a minimal amount of jarring on my knees or any risk of slipping. General health improves with Ving Tsun Kung Fu training that permeates everything you do!
These mental and physical gains come from Ving Tsun principles. Examples include: Relaxation, Centerline, Efficiency, and Simultaneous Offense and Defense. These and others create not only a deadly martial art, but a better and well-rounded individual. You can use these principles of being in any situation whether it’s work, school, relationships, athletics, or any myriad of life situations where you want to be relaxed, centered and rooted in that moment in time so you may react in an efficient and spontaneous manner that is most optimal. You can be more, do more, and give more when you start to live these principles.
Ving Tsun can help you develop a mental and physical connection with yourself that will extend to others and your community at large. Take an intro class and see for yourself if it’s something that suits you, the introductory fee will be deducted from your first months tuition. To really get a sense of the system I challenge you to come in and give it your all for three months. Train for three months and see what transformations you begin to see in yourself.
Ving Tsun Kung Fu is easy to learn, difficult to master. A worthy endeavor indeed! Anyone can train Ving Tsun Kung Fu. Young and old, already fit or needing to improve, male or female (VT was created by a woman!) all will benefit with mindful effort and training on your part.
